Professional Experience

Garth was a Naval pilot with the Royal Canadian Navy, 1962-1969. Pilot, 420 Air Reserve Squadron, 1979-1983. He was admitted to the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society in June 1975.

Garth has been a Nova Scotia Barristers' Society representative on the three person working group that authored a Discussion Paper Prepared For Nova Scotia Barristers' Society & The Association of Nova Scotia Land Surveyors by the Working Group Respecting Parcel Description Questions, 2008. This report addresses matters of mutual concern to the two professions and recommends legislative and procedural changes to harmonize the work of lawyers and surveyors.

He was a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society Professional Standards Committee from 1994 to 2008. He was a Nova Scotia Barristers' Society representative on the Registry 2000 Steering Committee of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, 2001 to 2005 when the Committee disbanded. This Committee provided advice to the Deputy Minister about implementing the Land Registration Act. The Committee comprised representatives of key stakeholders to help ensure that the goals of the Registry 2000 project were met.Since dissolution of the Registry 2000 Steering Committee in 2005, served on the Service Nova Scotia & Municipal Relations Practice Advisory Committee as called upon from time to time.

He has authored the Review of Land Titles Legislation, 1999, as consultant to the Nova Scotia Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs. This report provided the conceptual model on which the Nova Scotia Land Registration Act of 2001 is based. He was one of three Nova Scotia Barristers Society representatives on the Registry 2000 Business Area Analysis Sub-Committee, 1997. This multi-disciplinary group of registry office system stakeholders analyzed current conveyancing processes and practices in Nova Scotia in depth then made over forty recommendations for land registry reform under Registry 2000.

With 36 years experience at Taylor MacLellan Cochrane his principal practice areas are real estate, corporate, commercial law and estate planning.

Professional Activities & Affiliations

Garth is a member of the Professional Standards Committee of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society. He is a former Director and Secretary of the Eastern Kings Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Technology Committee of the Kings County Economic Development Committee. He has served on the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society Council and has presented a number of papers on Property law at Continuing Legal Education Seminars for lawyers.

He is a member of the Rotary Club of Kentville and was its President for 1991/92 and was awarded the Paul Harris. He was President of Family and Children's Services of Kings County from 1983 to 1985.

Before practising law Garth served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a naval pilot.
